The Winding Road to Winterborn

Where I was

Starting is the hardest part. A few years ago, I witnessed two friends of mine get married and you knew when the bridal march was a song from an Elder Scrolls game that they were perfect for each other. Seeing that big moment made me wonder where life would take me after that. I had spent years trying to gain a foothold in various industries, but none of them seemed to stick.

This was around the time where I had become a manager at a RadioShack but that wouldn’t last more than a few months as the stores in my area were all shut down and I had nowhere to go. It was time to look at options. I had never given going to school a serious shot when I was younger, and I could go uninhibited for a few years without gaining debt. Screw it, why not? If nothing else, I’ll gain a few skills that can help me down the line with a degree to back it up.

Where I am

Here we are a few years later and I’m one semester away from getting my degree. I’ve done the best I’ve ever done in school as I really care. It’s summertime and Kent, one of the friends who I saw get married, tells me he wants to form his own studio. He’s ready to take the big risk of forming an independent game studio. It’s something that has always been in the back of his mind for as long as I’ve known him (14 years) and I knew he had a story to tell. He asked me to be a part of it. How could I say no?

Winterborn formed just a few short months ago and there was a lot of waiting. So much waiting that it didn’t really feel “real” at first. We did some of the groundwork but hadn’t started forming a plan yet. Once we got together though, it was very real, and I couldn’t be happier with the direction we’re going and the team that I’m working with. We had an instant rapport and felt like a team the moment all five of us were in the same room. That room is our de facto studio in the basement of Kent’s parents’ house. This is where we played Kent’s homebrew tabletop game every Friday night for years. It’s all come full circle and I’m insanely grateful for the opportunity we have here. We all want to make something that we can be proud of.

Where I’ll be

It’s going to be a long few years and a lot of long hours, but I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish. I hope you’ll join us on our journey to make something special as we are putting a lot of thought and care into our first game. Thank you for checking out the site and look for more updates to come. We plan to chronicle a lot of the process in one form or another so and I can’t wait to be able to share more with you. I also want to thank Kent, Moudy, Jack, and Boo for making me feel like an important part of the team. There’s no other team I’d rather be a part of.
